Dostinex is derived from the fungus Ergot, which is a precursor to Lyseric acid diethylamide. Dostinex is manufactured by Pfizer, Inc. This drug is generically known as Cabergoline and is used to treat Hyperprolactinemia, pituitary tumors, aspects of Parkinson's disease, restless leg syndrome, and other prolactin disorders.; however, it is only officially approved for treating hyperprolactinemia. The most significant side effect of this diseasse is its propensity to cause valvular heart disease for patients who suffer from Parkinson's disease.

Dostinex does, however, have some very serious side effects. It is also problematic that it is rampantly used for off-label purposes (sometimes with a doctor's consent and sometimes without). For example, using this powerful and dangerous drug to treat a “disorder” like restless leg syndrome is one of the troubling trends that our lawyers have recently observed.

Although Dostinex side effects are to a large part dose dependent, there are a number of common side effects. In a study of Parkinson's patients who were undergoing cabergoline monotherapy, all of them reported at least one Dostinex adverse effect, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Nausea

  • Constipation

  • Vomiting

  • Dypepsia

  • Somnolence

  • Insomnia

  • Vertigo

  • Depression

  • Hallucinations

  • Dykinesia

  • Hypotension

  • Peripheral edema

  • Non-specific edema

  • Arrhythmia

  • Palpitations

  • Angina pectoris

The more serious side-effects of Dostinex include some that are common to all ergot-derived medications. These Cabergoline side effects include the following:

  • Pleuritis

  • Pleura disease

  • Pleura fibrosis

  • Lung Fibrosis

  • Pericarditis

  • Valvular Heart Disease

Valvular heart disease has a disturbingly high rate of apperance in patients who take Dostinex to treat their restless leg syndrome or their Parkinson's disease. Dostinex interacts with a receptor in the heart valve; that valve then overgrows and becomes significantly weaker. The reason why Parkinson's patients have a higher probability of suffering from this disease is because the dose given to Hyperpolactinemia patients is low enough that it does not have similar side effects. The drug is able to remain on the market because it is only officially approved for Hyperpolactinemia.
