Cimzia—generically known as Certolizumab pegol—is an antibody drug used to treat Crohn's disease and rheumatoid arthritis. The drug is classified as a TNF inhibitor monolocal antibody, which means that it is a tumor necrosis factor alpha blocker. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved this drug for use on patients who suffer from Crohn's disease, especially for those who do not repsond well to other forms of treatment. Although the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) suggested that Cimzia is a good drug against rheumatoid arthritis, and it has been approved in the United States for this same purpose.

Unfortunately, Cimzia, like similar TNF inhibitors—Remicade and Enbrel, has some serious negative side effects, which have resulted in patients filing Cimzia lawsuits. Some of the most common side effects include an increased risk of Fungal infections that occur in partients. The FDA issued a warning in September, 2008 about the possibility of contracting infections as a result of taking Cimzia or other TNF inhibitors. Another kind of infection, for which patients are at greater risk, is tuberculosis.

There is also a Cimzia cancer risk, in which cancerous cells begin to attack white blood cells. While this condition is quite rare, it has happened enough times to be included in the warning labels for Cimzia. The risk of cancer is much higher in younger patients than it is in older ones.

A more complete list of Cimzia adverse effects includes the following:

  • Heart Failure

The side effects of Cimzia can be pretty extreme. While many of these side effects can be prevented with careful use and thorough investigation by a physician, they can sometimes manifest themselves no matter how careful the patient may have been.

If a doctor or other medical professional does not take proper care to identify all the possible counterindications, he or she may be liable for medical malpractice. For example, it is expected that a doctor will ask about whicch medications a patient is taking and whether or not the patient ever had hepatitis.
