Aptivus, which is generically known as Tipranavir or tipranavir disodisum, is a protease inhibitor drug manufactured by Boehringer-Ingelheim. Aptivus is given to patients who need treatment for HIV. Essentially, Aptivus prevents the replication of viruses, such as HIV, that are resistant to other protease inhibitors. Although Aptivus serves an important medical function, its side effects can be more serious than those of other antiretrovirals. Tipranovir was approved for US markets in 2005 and was approved for pediatric use in 2008.

Currently, packages of Aptivus have a black box warning that states that patients taking this drug have the potential to develop some serious Aptivus side effects, namely hemorrhaging in the brain (intracranial hemorrhaging). However, there are also more Aptivus adverse effects that should cause concern amongst patients. These include:

  • Diabetes Mellitus

  • Hepatitis

  • Increase in Cholesterol

  • Fatal Bleeding in the Brain

Patients who have other conditions, such as head trauma, lesions in the central nervous system, and recent brain surgery, are more likely to be seriously impacted by the side effects of Aptivus. Studies have found that at least eight patients have died as a result of bleeding in the brain as a result of taking Aptivus.

If you or a loved one has been injured as a result of taking Aptivus, a lawyer with an Aptivus law firm might be able to help you secure recovery for damages. Contact one of our unsafe drug attorneys today. If you believe a physician did not apply a sufficiently high standard of care in prescribing and administering Aptivus, that physician or other medical professional might have committed medical malpractice.
