Avastin, which is generically known as Bevacizumab, is a drug used to treat a variety of cancers, and it is manufactured by Genentech and Roche. It was originally approved to be used in conjunction with chemotherapy in 2004. While, it was previously approved for breast cancer treatments, the approval was revoked in the fall of 2011. The reason why it was revoked was because there was no indication that it improved the quality of life of women suffering from breast cancer.
Some problems with Avastin include the fact that it inhibits the growth of blood vessels, which, by extension, inhibits future healing.
Avastin side effects include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Hypertension
- Heightened Risk of Bleeding
- Bowel Perforation
- Nasal Septum Perforation
- Blood Clots
- Renal Thrombotic Microangiopathy
- Intestine Perforations
- Coronary Artery Disease
- Peripheral Artery Disease
- High Blood Pressure
Furthermore, while Avastin was being tested, there were a number of deaths. These deaths occurred when Avastin was tested with another cancer drug Xelox, which contains the medication Xeloda. There is good indication that there is some contraindication going on here.
