Xolair is a humanized anitbody used to treat severe asthma. It is generically known as Omalizumab, and it is marketed by Genentech and Novartis. Xolair is extremely expensive, so it is usually reserved for only the most extreme cases of asthma.

Xolair has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat adults and adolescents who have asthma and who have tested positive for a perennial aeroallergen. The other condition for treatment with Xolair is that the patients do not respond well to corticosteroids (inhaled steroids).

Although Xolair is effective at treating asthma, it has some severe side effects that could be the subject of Xolair litigation. In 2007, the FDA has requested that the makers of Xolair add a boxed warning to Xolair informing patients that this drug might cause Anaphylaxis, which causes trouble breathing, chest tightness, dizziness, and a swollen mouth and throat.

A more complete list of Xolair side effects includes the following:

  • Anaphylaxis
  • Cancer
  • Churg-Strauss Syndrome
  • Nasal Polyps
  • Adrenal Insufficiency

Not all of these side effects have been proven to actually transpire, such as the cancer risk, but there are risks associated with using very powerful drugs such as Xolair. The most common source of lawsuits is Anaphylaxis, however.

Anaphylaxis may be fatal. The symptoms manifest themselves over a rather short period of time and the person suffering from the symptoms may get rashes, itchiness, spasms in the respiratory muscles, and shortness of breath. More serious symptoms include abdominal pain, myocardial infarction, and cardiac arrest.

If you or a loved one has been seriously injured as a result of taking Xolair, you might be eligible for compensation, which a Xolair law firm can help you secure. Contact one of our unsafe drug lawyers today to schedule a free and confidential case consultation.
