Zyvox is an antibiotic drug used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is generically known as Linezolid, and it is manufactured and marketed by Pfizer. It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for skin and soft tissue infections, but it is used off-label for a number of other infections as well. It has been approved in 2000, and it is currently one of the more expensive antibiotics available on the market. Twenty tablets of Zyvox can cost as much as two-thousand dollars.

Although Zyvox has a number of side effects associated with its independent use, the most serious side effects involve the use of other drugs, namely those that effect serotonin receptors. It is because Zyvox is a monamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) that it should not be used with other MAOIs and should be used with the greatest caution with anti-depressants in the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) and Selective Serotonin-norepipnephrine Inhibitor (SNRI) classes. There are even a variety of foods that can cause adverse reactions when combined with Zyvox.
