Zyvox is an antibiotic drug used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It is generically known as Linezolid, and it is manufactured and marketed by Pfizer. It has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration for skin and soft tissue infections, but it is used off-label for a number of other infections as well. It has been approved in 2000, and it is currently one of the more expensive antibiotics available on the market. Twenty tablets of Zyvox can cost as much as two-thousand dollars.

Although Zyvox has a number of side effects associated with its independent use, the most serious side effects involve the use of other drugs, namely those that effect serotonin receptors. It is because Zyvox is a monamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) that it should not be used with other MAOIs and should be used with the greatest caution with anti-depressants in the Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI) and Selective Serotonin-norepipnephrine Inhibitor (SNRI) classes. There are even a variety of foods that can cause adverse reactions when combined with Zyvox. The reason why serotonin drugs should be used cautiosly with Zyvox is because of the possibility of causing serotonin syndrome, which is a life-threatening adverse drug reaction.

Serotonin Syndrome is a reaction caused by inadvertant interaction between drugs. It is alternatively called serotonin toxicity, serotonin storm, serotonin poisoning, serotonergic syndrome, serotonin sickness, or serotonin toxidrome because it resembles positioning. The symptoms of serotonin syndrome include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Confusion
  • Memory Issues
  • Hyperactivity
  • Excessive Sweating
  • Twitching
  • Spontaneous Clonus
  • Inducible Clonus
  • Tremor
  • Hypertonism
  • Delirium
  • Weakness
  • Muscle Painkiller
  • Muscular Paralysis
  • Hyperkinesia

Serotonin Syndrome is sometimes confused with neuroleptic maligants condition (NMS), but the two conditions have important differences.
