Meridia, which was generically known as Sibutramine, was a drug used to combat obesity. However, in 2010 it was taken off of the market because it increased the risk of deadly cardiovascular events and stroke. Interestingly, Sibutramine is a Serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI), which is similar to many antidepressant and amphetamines; however, its function is very very different. Sibutramine, or Meridia, was developed by Knoll Pharmaceuticals, but was subsequently manufactured and marketed by Abbott Laboratories.

Abbott Laboratories sold it under a variety of names including Reducitil, Meridia, Sibutramine, and Sibutrex.

The history of Meridia is riddled with suspicious events. For example, the FDA advisory committee voted against approving Meridia for ingestion, yet it was still approved. Since the beginning of its market run, Meridia has been a constant target for suspicion because of the very serious Meridia side effects.

Meridia adverse effects include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Cardiovascular events

  • Increase in blood pressure

  • Cardiac arrhythmias

  • Paresthesia

  • Mood Changes

  • Suicidal Ideation

  • Seizures

  • Jaundice

  • Fever

  • Abnormal Bruising

  • Abnormal Bleeding

  • Dyspnea

  • Edema

  • Hemiplegia

  • Abnormal Vision

  • Chest pain

  • Melena

  • Depression

  • Menstrual Cramps

  • Heart Attacks

  • Strokes

As anyone can see, the side effects of Sibutramine are very severe. After a number of studies by American and European groups, Abbott Laboratories decided to withdraw Meridia from the US market. The FDA was pressuring them, but did not formally ban it. Additionally, the efficacy of the drug was repeatedly questioned. Some people would gain wait after taking it.
